60 years ago, Malaysians gained a state but we still struggle to form a nation

Malaysians continue to struggle to establish a Bangsa Malaysia even after 60 years of existence as a country.

Social scientists, such as Universiti Malaya scholar Dr Abdul Muqit Muhammad, argue that “bangsa” refers to a common identity that could include all of those choices above and more.

But because the term has been popularly misused and misunderstood, Malaysians continue to struggle to establish a Bangsa Malaysia even after 60 years of existence as a country, says Abdul Muqit. For instance, for many politicians and individuals, bangsa has been inaccurately and popularly used to mean ethnicity, as in “bangsa Melayu”, “bangsa Cina” or “bangsa India”.

Another reason Bangsa Malaysia remains difficult is because for decades, the political entity that governed Malaysia emphasised power-sharing among different ethnic-based parties. “It’s the reason why ethnic and religion-based parties are still popular even among first time voters, and despite the push for a new kind of politics,” says Abdul Muqit.
