A major concern among those working hard at preserving heritage in Sabah is the speedy loss of mother tongues among the indigenous communities.
All sorts of ideas and proposals have been put forward to stem the seemingly unstoppable language death. Several groups have even started native language-only schools but the results have been very limited. As of today, there is yet no truly effective system which can claim to eventually ensure strong revival of the dying mother tongues.
One excellent model for such a programme is the Language Nest system which was innovated in New Zealand to revive the Maori language and later used to revive the Hawaiian language. The result of the system was a resounding success! The system has played a crucial role in reviving Maori and Hawaiian languages by providing immersive and culturally enriched environments for language learners, especially children.
