With artificial intelligence, phishing scams are now harder to detect, more convincing and increasingly tailored to the individual

You’ve just landed a new job and shared the exciting news on LinkedIn. A few days later, an e-mail from your “new manager” lands in your inbox, asking you to confirm details for your onboarding process by logging into a portal. It looks legitimate. It even mentions your job title and department.Phishing emails are fraudulent messages designed to trick recipients into revealing sensitive information or clicking on malicious links, and they’re a common tool for cybercriminals.

Using tools powered by large language models, attackers can scrape personal details from digital footprints in seconds. The study found that these tools successfully gathered accurate information in 88 per cent of cases, allowing them to craft e-mails tailored to the recipient’s job, interests or recent activities.

Consider another example: You recently attended a financial planning webinar and shared your excitement about learning new budgeting tools on social media. A week later, you receive an e-mail from what looks like the webinar host, offering free access to premium tools in exchange for a “one-time verification fee.”

Falling victim to phishing doesn’t just expose your login credentials, it opens the door to drained bank accounts and identity theft. Phishing e-mails frequently target online banking platforms, investment accounts and digital payment systems like PayPal. A single compromised password can give criminals access to all your finances – even your retirement savings.
