Based on reports in the– the pads will force the iPhones into data recovery mode , reboots, and once the boot is complete, the NFC chip in the phone will no longer function for payments.The NFC chip in the iPhone controls features such as Apple Pay and digital car keys, which BMW supports with iPhones.
Qi charging is available as an option for multiple models in Malaysia – including the EV variants. Malaysian BMW also supports digital car keys – for both iOS and Android devices via the BMW app. The problem is severe enough that users reported needing to replace their phones as this is a hardware problem, not a software problem. Thus far there are no permanent solutions to the problem.
The problem is also affecting the whole iPhone 15 lineup – from the standard model all the way to the Pro Max. Owners of BMW with iPhone 15 are to proceed with caution until the issue is sorted by Apple, BMW or both.
