Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has announced that the government is aiming to ensure not less than 85% of rural areas get 5G coverage by

the end of 2024. Accordingly, a target of at least 50% coverage for rural areas has been set for mid-2024.

According to Bernama, Zahid said that the remaining 15% might be mountainous areas, hence it would be quite difficult to reach. He also lauded the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who is progressive in terms of ideas and visions. The Deputy Prime Minister added that coordination is being carried out because the government feels that rural folks deserve it. He elaborated that the government doesn’t want them to try to get access to the internet by climbing trees.

Despite the difficult challenges in providing 5G coverage to rural areas, he said that he is confident the government can do it. In the meantime, Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development said that his ministry alongside the Ministry of Communications and Digital and the Orang Asli Development Department has identified Orang Asli areas for the installation of Starlink satellite devices.
