The major averages pulled back off their best levels going into the close but remained in positive territory. The Nasdaq jumped 121.08 points or 0.9 percent to 13,639.86, the S&P 500 climbed 12.40 points or 0.3 percent to 4,378.38 and the Dow rose 56.74 points or 0.2 percent to 34,152.60.
The rebound by stocks also came as treasury yields showed a notable move back to the downside after surging in the previous session. Traders are likely to pay close attention to Powell's remarks, looking for additional confirmation the Fed will leave interest rates unchanged for the foreseeable future.
Economists had expected the trade deficit to climb to $60.2 billion from the $58.3 billion originally reported for the previous month. Airline, retail and tobacco stocks also showed notable moves to the upside, while energy stocks moved sharply lower along with the price of crude oil.
