The nation’s sole rice importer says it has distributed 38% more white rice from January to August than the average monthly sales in the past five years.
Bernas says the increased demand for local white rice was caused by the price difference between local and imported rice.
“This means that the supply of white rice is more than sufficient without the government having to use its stockpile,” it said in a statement today. It said it remains committed to supporting all intervention programmes carried out by the agriculture and food security ministry to ensure a sufficient supply of local rice.
