MUAR: Lim Yok Lang did not think she would one day play the kompang as she had absolutely no musical experience.
This changed about four months ago when she decided to attend a community kompang class taught by instructor Abu Hanif Yahaya – also known as Cikgu Abu.“My initial impression of the kompang , was quite limited. I have only seen them being played at Malay weddings and I used to think that they were just randomly beating their hands against the instrument.
“His teaching style makes the class interesting and engaging. He would bring one or two of his mentees along to demonstrate and play along with us. “I find it meaningful that we get to learn something new together as a community as the class has Chinese, Malay and Indian participants,” she said, adding that she has also introduced some of her friends to the classes.
“They were taught both theory and practical; the history and background of the kompang as well as how to hold the musical instrument correctly and hit it the right way.
