TIM KROCHAK PHOTO - tim krochakThe leader of the New Democratic Party says Nova Scotia’s premier should be pulling out all the stops to assist vulnerable people facing a tough winter instead of writing letters to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board.

In a letter to the NSUARB, dated Nov. 28 and posted on the board’s site, Houston said he does not believe that the proposed agreement that would mean a 6.9 per cent residential power rate hike in 2023 and another 6.8 per cent jump in 2024 for a total compounded increase of about 14 per cent over two years is in the best interest of ratepayers.

Houston noted that the rate hike agreed upon in the settlement deal between NSP and several consumer representatives that include the consumer advocate, the small-business advocate, the industrial group and Dalhousie University, the Affordable Energy Coalition and several municipal utilities is the same rate hike requested before the majority Progressive Conservative government passed Bill 212 on Nov. 8.

Chender said the government knew full well when it passed the bill legislating a 1.8 per cent cap that it did not include fuel costs.
