MUMBAI: Taburan hujan musim monsun di India tahun ini direkodkan paling rendah sejak 2018 apabila fenomena El Nino menjadikan bulan Ogos sebagai bulan terkering dalam tempoh lebih seabad.

Hampir separuh daripada tanah pertanian di negara ini mengalami masalah kekurangan sistem pengairan, sekali gus bergantung kepada musim monsun untuk menyuburkan tanaman. Pengeluaran yang lebih rendah juga boleh mendorong India yang merupakan pengeluar beras, gandum dan gula kedua terbesar dunia untuk mengenakan lebih banyak sekatan terhadap eksport komoditi.

Menurut Jabatan Meteorologi India , negara ini dijangka mengalami defisit hujan sebanyak empat peratus untuk musim ini, dengan mengandaikan ia kesan daripada El Nino.
