The recent Irish General Election has led to Micheal Martin becoming the next Taoiseach, supported by Fianna Fail and Fine Gael. The election results reflect voter dissatisfaction with housing and the cost of living but a preference for established parties over left-wing alternatives like Sinn Fein.
The General Election is all over bar the shouting. The people have spoken and judging by the numbers, they want Micheal Martin as the next Taoiseach and Fianna Fail and Fine Gael back in office.
The Left itself in this country is a joke. Many of the so-called socialists like Richard Boyd Barrett and People Before Profit would rather spend a life in opposition than a day in government where they can make a big difference to people's lives. The only concession Sinn Fein made was two days before the election it urged its voters to give their preference votes to other left-wing parties. This should have been decided months ago.
They want to see the country's new-found wealth spread among all the people and that should mean better wages, as well as cheaper homes and rent. Eamon Ryan, the former leader of the party, denied this over the weekend but as someone who lives in a rural area, every time they opened their mouths I felt the Greens were lecturing us.
The likes of Michael Lowry, Sean Canney, Noel Grealish, Boxer Moran can be relied upon along with the Independent Ireland Party. All these people will fight the corner for rural Ireland and the west.
