The Israeli authorities had initially closed the Erez crossing, the only gateway for Palestinian pedestrians from the Gaza Strip, for the Jewish New Year holiday on Sept 15. While patients seeking medical treatment and foreigners had been allowed to use the crossing, thousands of Palestinian workers from the coastal enclave had been banned from entering Israel.
Protesters had often resorted to burning tyres, and throwing stones and petrol bombs at Israeli troops, who responded with tear gas and live bullets.
