Japanese automakers stand to gain from Detroit’s union strike

Besides short-term gains, the expected wage costs increase the edge for non-US car manufacturers.

US car manufacturers risk lower sales and a production decline of 300,000 to 500,000 vehicles amid labour negotiations.

The strike seems to be getting broad support from the US public, even after the Big Three rejected demands for raises of as much as 40% over four years. This provides a much-needed boost to the sector, which had lagged on worries about firms’ slow response to developing electric vehicles, and gives an added tonic to the market amid concerns the advantages of a weaker yen are waning.

Costs for Japan’s exporters have already become comparatively cheaper due to the fall in the yen of 12% so far this year and almost 30% over the past three years.
