A “catastrophic” university fee system won’t attract students into teaching or agriculture and is so unfair it needs to be remodelled, says education expert Andrew Norton.
Labor’s plan to recruit high-achieving school-leavers into the school teacher workforce by offering a $12,000 annual stipend would mostly be “just a windfall” to those who had already chosen it as a career path.
“Just saying they will pay off their debts in 2032 instead of 2035 is very far in the distance. Whereas, $12,000 now will make a material difference to their lives in a very short timeframe. Mr Norton said the Job Ready Graduates fee structure was a shambles and unfair to so many students, and Labor would have little alternative to amend it if it came into government.
