South Bar residents Rod Gale, left, and Phil Wilcox are hoping a Change.org petition will further urge CBRM and transit officials to consider a bus route through their community. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST - Ian NathansonAs a relatively new Cape Breton permanent resident, it was very disappointing to read about the bureaucratic roadblocks impeding one of Cape Breton’s largest drivers of revitalization, namely the need for housing international students at Cape Breton University .

In this case, helping to solve the housing issue by adding a few bus stops through South Bar so students as well as permanent residents could use public transit is a ‘no brainer’ and should be implemented immediately. The article referenced above indicates there must be a process requiring affected residents to first decide and approve a tax rate for the bus service before any service is initiated.

In this way the immediate needs for some of our international students are solved, and the permanent residents would have the opportunity see the benefits of a transit bus service in South Bar prior to having to make a tax rate decision.Op-ed Disclaimer
