There have been cases where the rich have bought up affordable housing in an effort to gain more wealth by renting out their units. This would then reduce the supply of affordable housing for the community it was meant for, the underprivileged.
Well, it looks like the authorities are now implementing measures to ensure that the supply is maintained. According to a report by Astro Awani, the government will implement a rule to limit the purchase of affordable housing to only 1 unit per eligible citizen. This will be enforced in an effort to ensure an adequate supply of affordable homes.
It was also informed that a land inventory information system that integrates all ‘wakaf‘ land information will be established to identify suitable spaces for the construction of more affordable housing. “In addition, the cooperation of the state religious council and related agencies will speed up the development of affordable houses on wakaf land,” the report shared. Also read: Penang Residents Erect Banners to Warn Homestayers to Keep Out of Their Neighbourhood
