L'Uomo di ottobre, adesso in edicola, rende omaggio ai pescatori siciliani che scelgono di mettere da parte il proprio lavoro per soccorrere in alto mare i barconi dei migranti

While a life at sea can make a man a thief, circumstance can also make him a saint – even if he curses because he hasn’t caught any fish. Or because, when the fish do start biting, word of the catch spreads like wildfire and all the other boats turn up, fan out and begin combing his little patch of the Mediterranean. Then there are the Libyans, who start shooting as soon as you come within 74 miles of their coast.

This is why these fishermen may swear when they see a boat full of migrants, but their actions show they’ve got hearts of gold. They haul in their nets, stop working, lose out on red shrimp worth 60 euros per kilo, burn fuel to take everyone to safety, and then go back out, hoping not to damage their boats during the operation. It’s like throwing a minimum of 5,000 euros a day into the sea. But they can’t turn a blind eye. They can’t just send out an SOS and wait for the military patrol ships.

Photo. Captain and ship owner Mimmo Asaro and his crew. In February 2017 during a long fishing expedition, 24 miles off Tripoli, Libya, they spotted a raft with 174 people in trouble. Many people were extremely dehydrated, and they were given assistance, food, and drink by Asaro and his crew.Read the full interview by Raffaele Panizza and see the photo shoot by Roselena Ramistella in the October issue of L'Uomo, on newsstands from 23 October.
