The groups say they represent 9.2 million people who want the bill to be tabled and supported in Parliament.
A group of NGOs handed over a petition supporting the GEG bill to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament today.
PETALING JAYA: A group of NGOs has submitted a petition to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in support of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Bill, also known as the Generational End Game bill.“We would like to thank the prime minister for accepting our petition. We urge the bill to be tabled and supported immediately ,” they said in a joint statement.
The group comprises five organisations: Ikram Health, the Malaysian Green Lung Association, Medical Mythbusters Malaysia, Majlis Kawalan Tembakau Malaysia, and Akademi Profesor Malaysia. They said the bill was important as smoking could no longer be effectively contained under the existing regulations due to legal loopholes, especially in regulating electronic cigarettes or vapes.
The bill was introduced in July last year by then health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, but faced resistance from several MPs.The proposed law seeks to ban the use, purchase and sale of cigarettes and vape products to those born after 2007.
