The first big showdown between Justin Trudeau and Pierre Poilievre has come and gone and the best both leaders can boast is that they walked away with a draw.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The fact that Trudeau and Poilievre were able to go back and forth on the pressing issues of the day — without the show turning into a circus — may actually be evidence that both leaders respect the serious times they’re in. The Conservative leader also peppered his questions with personal jabs against Trudeau, notably the prime minister’s recent world travels, but it was pretty standard stuff for political debate, circa 2022.
“If Canadians had followed the advice of the leader of the opposition and invested in volatile cryptocurrencies in an attempt to ‘opt out of inflation,’ they would have lost half of their savings,” Trudeau said. It would be tempting to say the political circus has rolled out of town for a while, but really, we know that the showdown between Trudeau and Poilievre is only just beginning. This ride is going to get rough.
