Kota Kinabalu: The State Government, through the Town and Regional Planning Department (TRPD), on Tuesday signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with WWF-Malaysia with the aim of achieving sustainable development through an integrated spatial planning.

Under the MoU, both the TRPD and WWF-Malaysia would support and review the Sabah Structural Plan 2033 and the Town and Country Planning Ordinance , as well as the district plans for Tawau, Kunak, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Kalabakan.

He said spatial planning was critical for Sabah to help the State deliver economic, social and environmental benefits.“This is by creating more stable and predictable conditions for investment and development, securing community benefits from development and promoting prudent use of land and natural resources for development, and to overcome the risks caused by climate change, for example sea water rise and extreme weather,” he said.

“This is part of the programme’s Living Landscape approach that aims to achieve and maintain a delicate balance between economic development and the protection of forests and its inhabitants,” he said.
