Syabas Sabar! MY heartiest congratulations, Syabas to Sabar [Sabah Action Body Advocating Rights] for its decision to support Hajiji’s rejection of the Territorial Sea Act 2012 by challenging the Federal Government in court over this Act.

By: Datuk John LoMY heartiest congratulations, Syabas to Sabar for its decision to support Hajiji’s rejection of the Territorial Sea Act 2012 by challenging the Federal Government in court over this Act. Sabar Chairman, Jo Samad has said that “the Sabah government had rejected the TSA 2012, with Chief Minister Hajiji Noor stating that the Act impeded the state’s ability to impose its own laws on matters beyond three nautical miles at sea”.

Sabah’s previous territorial rights, upon gaining independence from Britain, was the continental shelf which is very much larger than the miserable 3 nautical miles. “Under international law, within its defined EEZ, a coastal nation has Sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring, exploiting, conserving, and managing natural resources of the seabed, subsoil, and waters above it”.

All too often, this is taken for granted. Sabah has the longest coast line among the states in Malaysia, more than 1,000 km long. Within 200 nmi which is 370 km zone are incalculable worth of valuable marine resources, oil and gas and unparallel amount of valuable oil/gas and minerals plus potential toll fees from ships sailing in the South China Sea.

Sabah must never let our EEZ rights be taken away spuriously or under any pretext or circumstances. https://www.google.com/search?q=spratly+islands+oil+and+gas+reserves&rlz=1C1CHBF_enMY728MY728&oq=spratly+oil+an&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqCAgBEAAYFhgeMgYIABBFGDkyCAgBEAAYFhgeMgoIAhAAGIYDGIoFMgoIAxAAGIYDGIoF0gEINzU5NGowajmoAgCwAgA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

It will be the same irrespective who is the PM or which party is in power in KL. These will never be given back to Sabah on a plate. We shouldn’t be impressed by nice words or promises, we must see results only.Sabah’s best insurance for a better future and sustainable prosperity is political stability and inherent economic strength, including ownership and control over our economy in real terms, not superficially.
