The hybrid strain can produce double the current rice harvests. A pilot project will be carried out on a total of 10,000 hectares in three sites.
Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg said Sarawak could become the rice bowl of Malaysia if plans succeeded.
Abang Johari said the location for the project has been identified in Lubok Punggor in Gedong, Tanjung Bijat , Spaoh and Tanjung Purun with a total land area of 10,000 hectares. “We want the federal government to assist us in preparing infrastructure and by 2030, maybe Sarawak will become the rice bowl of Malaysia and start exporting rice in the future,” he said.
