GEORGE TOWN: A childcare centre here has been ordered to shut down following an incident of sexual abuse involving one of its residents.
A 17-year-old girl had claimed that she was kissed on the lips and hugged by a man, believed to the chairman of the home on the Penang island, on Feb 19.
Penang Welfare Department director Zakaria Taib said the centre would need to be closed down within the next few days.“We have moved the alleged victim and her siblings to another home after the incident came to light.“Our priority is the children’s safety. The case is now being handled by the police.” he added.The incident, believed to have been captured on CCTV, came to light after a social worker with a non-governmental organisation lodged a police report on May 1.
Child Protection Society Penang social service head G. Suria Kumari said the home should not have been allowed to operate. She added rules must be adhered to if there is a request to register a childcare centre with the authorities.
