LABUAN: Umno chief here Datuk Mohammad Mafi Alli Hassan said the Government should consider allocating RM30 million over three years to develop Labuan into a premier destination for sports-based events.
He said only big money and big prizes for events would attract hundreds of participants from all over to boost the tourism industry. “With such funds at least two or three events of high impact could be held and bring back the crowd to Labuan,” he said. Rafi, who aired his views on a podcast programme, said in the past there was the Federal Territories Minister and the Tourism Ministry to assist Labuan but the FT Minister has been abolished.
According to hotel occupancy rates, it was down to between 30-35pc compared to 60-70pc and 80-100pc during weekends before with all hotels enjoying the boom including budget hotels.“But based on 2021 statistics, the actual number of visitor arrivals recorded as merely 76,000. He added that without a big budget it would be difficult to move forward. He said years ago he held the Labuan International Big Bike Festival and it drew some thousand bikers from Borneo to Labuan.
He further said, similarly, the Labuan International Sea Challenge should also restore its lustre with good prize money as before,.
