UNOCHA says just over 1,000 were killed, although authorities have put the death toll at more than 2,500.
GENEVA: More than 11,000 people have been affected by a series of earthquakes in Afghanistan’s Herat province on Saturday morning, according to the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs , reported dpa news agency.
The agency said just over 1,000 were killed, although Afghan authorities have put the death toll at more than 2,500, according to local Afghan media. The UN released US$5 million dollars in emergency aid on Sunday and announced an appeal for donations soon after assessing the needs.
