Child psycholinguist Dr Rabiah Tul Adawiyah Mohd Salleh, whose work centres around child language acquisition, laments the loss of mother tongues as parents put more emphasis on English, thought of as a ticket to better academic achievement and work prospect as adults. A 2022 research in the journal Early Education and Development concluded that “preschoolers with stronger vocabulary skills at the start of the preschool year will go on to do better at school, with teachers and peers”. “It’s natural for them to be confused, because their brain is still developing. It’s also natural for them to make mistakes as they code switch. Parents need to give them time, more so when they are learning more languages,”
