PORT DICKSON: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has disposed of 1,301kg worth of various types of drugs valued at more than RM27mil, seized between 2020 and earlier this year.
Its deputy director-general Khairul Anwar Bachok said the drugs were seized in the Kedah and Perlis maritime zones, the Kuala Kedah maritime zone, and the Tanjung Sedili and Batu Pahat maritime zones in Johor.
“The disposal of drugs such as cannabis, heroin, morphine, methamphetamine and methylenedioxymethamphetamine was carried out after MMEA received an official court order,” he said.“It is a safe and effective way to destroy the drugs without polluting the environment,” Bernama reported him as telling a press conference yesterday.
Also present were Johor MMEA director First Admiral Nurul Hizam Zakaria and Kedah/Perlis MMEA director First Admiral Romli Mustafa. Khairul Anwar said for the Kedah and Perlis zones, seizures were made at the coastal border between Kuala Perlis and Satun, Thailand, with the drugs being thrown into the sea after smugglers detected the presence of the authorities.
The drugs were brought in from a neighbouring country and believed to have been meant for the market in Langkawi and Penang, among others, Khairul Anwar added.
