WorldAIDSDay: According to UNAIDS, about 500,000 children and adults are living with HIV in Cameroon. But rejection, unawareness and lack of access to medication make it difficult for patients to get the treatment they need, as DW's NgalaChimtom reports.

Fabiola Yerimah said she had no clue that her 2-year-old cousin was HIV positive."When I would ask the mom what he was sick of, the mom would say it is fungi," the 22-year-old told DW.

Usually within six months of starting treatment, most people taking HIV medicine can get their viral load so low that is undetectable. At this undetectable stage, people won't transmit HIV to their partners through sex, according to theBriand Tubuoh has a similar story of frustration and resilience in the face of HIV. He received a positive HIV test at a time when his mother was very ill.

When he finally decided to open up about his HIV status to his family and friends, their reactions were devastating."I was rejected because of my status and there were times that I was asking questions to myself … why is it that God cannot just take my life; why should I live with this condition? Do I have a future?"

It's a valid concern, one shared by Dr. Gilbert Tene, a public health physician and pediatrician who specializes in mother-to-child HIV transmission.
