THE Mid-Autumn Festival has a history that dates as far back as 3000 years ago, but for most of us today, it means two things; nights lit up by gorgeous colourful lanterns and that irresistible treat, the mooncake.
Although they now come in various shapes, sizes and colours, the classic and iconic mooncake with its lotus seed paste with a salted egg yolk centre is still the best.
Of course, as Malaysians, we want to look for the best deals for these delights and would do almost anything to get that discount. Are scammers taking advantage of this by exploiting mooncake deals to cheat you out of your hard-earned cash?It is a scam if a seller requires you to side-load an APK into your smart device to get that lower price.
The Amaran Facebook page points out that scammers use fake mooncake deals to make unwitting victims install insecure apps on their devices. In turn they would use that app to steal bank login information and drain the victim’s bank account. It also advised people to only download apps from official platforms such as the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store and stay away from sketchy deals this festive season.
